What sorrow for those who say
that evil is good and good is evil,
that dark is light and light is dark,
that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes
and think themselves so clever."
Isaiah 5:20–21(NLT)
This is so evident in our culture. Even in my sheltered little corner of the world, I am surrounded by it. It brings me a great deal of sorrow, and I mourn for those who have fallen prey to deceit. But I also hear these verses as a caution to myself. Am I rightly naming evil when I encounter it? Am I fooled by the angel of light in a dark world? In my own righteous judgment of politicians and neighbors and church members, am I fooling myself with "wisdom" that is not from God? When I congratulate myself on being clever, the alarm bells better start ringing in my heart because a deceiver is on the loose looking for someone to devour!
"But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
1 Corinthians 15:57
