a journey through God's Word

Week 7

Birth, life, death.  Our lives are but a vapor.  Matthew begins with a list of those who have come and gone.  No more than a name, but each of their lives a marker in the history of God’s relationship with man.  For the Jews it all began with Abraham, the father of God’s chosen people.  From him came all the big names and events of Jewish and Christian history, and from his line eventually came Christ, the Savior of us all.  These names in the first chapter of Matthew tell a story of mankind’s journey of faith.  Each of the players in that journey lived out their own pilgrimage, just as each of us do.  Like Abraham, we are all strangers in a foreign place that is not our home.  Like the song says, “we are just a passing through.” But our life journey is not just the space between our birth and our death.  What happens in between matters and matters a lot. We are each on a journey of faith.  Every choice, every disaster, every victory, every relation-ship that we encounter on our journey has an effect in shaping our faith. God nurtured and disciplined and grew a people that He called His own.  That journey continues.  We also are a name in God’s book and living out a part in His Sovereign plan, a picture bigger than we can see.
